Optimising your images is a reasonably new part of SEO, but it can be very useful in driving traffic to your website through related keywords. Google receives approx. 200 million searches for images each month, and sites like Amazon.com get an unbelievable amount of people accessing their website through image searching; that’s a lot of potential traffic you could be taking advantage of.
Here are some basic but effective tips for optimising your images for search engines:
Firstly, your images should always be relative to the content that surrounds them; so for example if your image is of the Atlantic Ocean, you should put that image in a post that is discussing a subject relative to that image.
Next you should ensure your picture is named correctly, using the keyphrase you would want to rank for – don’t leave image names as ‘DC2389′ or the equivalent. So if you’re using an image in your blog post about good logo design, you should name the file ‘logo design example’. Make sure you don’t use the _ key in between the words in your title, as Google doesn’t read the space and will read the three words as one, meaning you won’t rank for your chosen keyphrase.
You should also use alt tags whenever uploading images to your site; this basically means naming the file again (and keeping the keyword), but slightly differently from the main title. So in the example we used before, you could set the alt tag as something like ‘excellent logo design example’.
You should use the same approach for image descriptions, adding a description of the photo that includes the same keyword phrase.
If you follow the above steps, and include your image with relevant content (if it’s a blog post it should be over 100 words), then you should find that you begin to rank highly in image searches for those keyphrases, which will in turn drive natural search traffic to your website.
That should give you a good start in optimising your images during your web design, which should in turn increase traffic to your website and help with general overall SEO.
